[Read out to them, O Prophet,] In the name of Allah, Mercy abundant, Mercy eternal. [They say that man shall not be raised for judgment.] No, I present the Day of Resurrection as a witness1; And no, I present man’s reproaching conscience as a witness2 [to the fact that man shall surely be faced with the consequences of his deeds].
|
لَا أُقْسِمُ بِيَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ ﴿١﴾ وَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِالنَّفْسِ اللَّوَّامَةِ ﴿٢﴾ |

Does man think that We cannot gather his bones [again]3? We can indeed reassemble even his very finger-tips4. [No, it is actually not because of his doubts in Our power that man refuses the Day of Judgment.] On the contrary, man only wishes to do evil5, even in the face of his pricking conscience6 He [arrogantly] says: ‘When shall be the Day of Resurrection?’7

أَيَحْسَبُ الْإِنسَانُ أَلَّن نَّجْمَعَ عِظَامَهُ ﴿٣﴾ بَلَىٰ قَادِرِينَ عَلَىٰ أَن نُّسَوِّيَ بَنَانَهُ ﴿٤﴾ بَلْ يُرِيدُ الْإِنسَانُ لِيَفْجُرَ أَمَامَهُ ﴿٥﴾ يَسْأَلُ أَيَّانَ يَوْمُ الْقِيَامَةِ ﴿٦﴾ |

– 15 |
[Today, he is allowed the opportunity to do what he desires.] But [the day] when the eyes are confounded [in fear]; and the moon is shadowed; and the sun and the moon are joined together; that day, man shall ask: “Where to run?” Absolutely not! There shall be no refuge on that day. Only before your Lord, that day, shall be the destiny. Man, on that day, shall be informed about what he sent forth [as good deeds for the hereafter] and what he held back [for his temporary life]. [Yet, man is not unaware of his deeds,] on the contrary, he is in fact, a witness upon himself8, whatever excuses he may proffer.

فَإِذَا بَرِقَ الْبَصَرُ ﴿٧﴾ وَخَسَفَ الْقَمَرُ ﴿٨﴾ وَجُمِعَ الشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ ﴿٩﴾ يَقُولُ الْإِنسَانُ يَوْمَئِذٍ أَيْنَ الْمَفَرُّ ﴿١٠﴾ كَلَّا لَا وَزَرَ ﴿١١﴾ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ الْمُسْتَقَرُّ ﴿١٢﴾ يُنَبَّأُ الْإِنسَانُ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِمَا قَدَّمَ وَأَخَّرَ ﴿١٣﴾ بَلِ الْإِنسَانُ عَلَىٰ نَفْسِهِ بَصِيرَةٌ ﴿١٤﴾ وَلَوْ أَلْقَىٰ مَعَاذِيرَهُ ﴿١٥﴾ |
16 – 19 |
لَا تُحَرِّكْ بِهِ لِسَانَكَ لِتَعْجَلَ بِهِ ﴿١٦﴾ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا جَمْعَهُ وَقُرْآنَهُ ﴿١٧﴾ فَإِذَا قَرَأْنَاهُ فَاتَّبِعْ قُرْآنَهُ ﴿١٨﴾ ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا بَيَانَهُ ﴿١٩﴾ |

20 – 25 |
[O people, do you have a basis for rejecting this final Judgment?] Absolutely not! On the contrary, the fact is that you are only enchanted by this world and [therefore,] ignore the Final Life13. [Whether you accept it or not, the fact remains that] many faces on that day shall be joyous, expecting the mercy of their Lord; and many faces, on that day, shall be mournful, dreading the great affliction that would break their backs14.

كَلَّا بَلْ تُحِبُّونَ الْعَاجِلَةَ ﴿٢٠﴾ وَتَذَرُونَ الْآخِرَةَ ﴿٢١﴾ وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَّاضِرَةٌ ﴿٢٢﴾ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهَا نَاظِرَةٌ ﴿٢٣﴾ وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ بَاسِرَةٌ ﴿٢٤﴾ تَظُنُّ أَن يُفْعَلَ بِهَا فَاقِرَةٌ ﴿٢٥﴾ |
26 – 30 |
[They mock our messenger and reject the Judgment.] Absolutely not! [That day,] when the departing soul reaches the throat and it is said ‘Is there a necromancer15?’ And he [the dying] would know that it is the time of parting [this world]; and one shin would clasp the other [in agony]; towards your Lord, that day, shall be the parting16.

كَلَّا إِذَا بَلَغَتِ التَّرَاقِيَ ﴿٢٦﴾ وَقِيلَ مَنْ ۜ رَاقٍ ﴿٢٧﴾ وَظَنَّ أَنَّهُ الْفِرَاقُ ﴿٢٨﴾ وَالْتَفَّتِ السَّاقُ بِالسَّاقِ ﴿٢٩﴾ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ الْمَسَاقُ ﴿٣٠﴾ |
31 – 33 |
فَلَا صَدَّقَ وَلَا صَلَّىٰ ﴿٣١﴾ وَلَـٰكِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ ﴿٣٢﴾ ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ إِلَىٰ أَهْلِهِ يَتَمَطَّىٰ ﴿٣٣﴾ |

Deplorable are you, so deplorable; again, deplorable are you, so deplorable.
|
أَوْلَىٰ لَكَ فَأَوْلَىٰ ﴿٣٤﴾ ثُمَّ أَوْلَىٰ لَكَ فَأَوْلَىٰ ﴿٣٥﴾ |
36 – 39 |
Does man really think that he shall be left alone without a [just] purpose19? [Look at him, how he persists in rejecting our providence and powers.] Was he not [once] a drop of liquid that is ejaculated? Then [from this liquid] he became a leech-like substance, then He (- the Almighty -) molded and then fashioned him [into a human being]. Then of this [material] He made two pairs – the male and the female.

أَيَحْسَبُ الْإِنسَانُ أَن يُتْرَكَ سُدًى ﴿٣٦﴾ أَلَمْ يَكُ نُطْفَةً مِّن مَّنِيٍّ يُمْنَىٰ ﴿٣٧﴾ ثُمَّ كَانَ عَلَقَةً فَخَلَقَ فَسَوَّىٰ ﴿٣٨﴾ فَجَعَلَ مِنْهُ الزَّوْجَيْنِ الذَّكَرَ وَالْأُنثَىٰ ﴿٣٩﴾ |

Does He not have the power to give life to the dead20?
|
أَلَيْسَ ذَٰلِكَ بِقَادِرٍ عَلَىٰ أَن يُحْيِيَ الْمَوْتَىٰ ﴿٤٠﴾ |
- The concept of accountability, answerability, reward and punishment is inherent to man. All worldly systems of possible accountability and reward are only a manifestation of this inherent concept of man. The Qur’an, over here, has referred to this inherent concept of judgment as evidence of an all-encompassing day of accountability. [↩]
- God has bestowed man with not only the sense to distinguish between good and evil, but also a conscience which reproaches and admonishes man at indulging in evil and which prompts, encourages and acknowledges all his good deeds. Here, man’s conscience has been presented as an evidence of the final day of Judgment. The Creator, who has made this infallible arrangement inherent to every man for the purpose of making him conscious of right and wrong and good and evil is not one who is indifferent towards man’s good and evil deeds. He shall most certainly hold man accountable for all his evil deeds – in the face of his awareness of what was right – and shall reward him for his adherence to what was right, sacrificing his immediate gains and pleasures. - When reminded of the approaching Day of Judgment, he shrugs off its possibility, saying that when we become dust and bones, who would be able resurrect us. [↩]
- Even though this may seem to be a mere claim, yet after having observed God’s creations, in general, and also our own creation, in particular, no one can even question this claim. [↩]

- That is, he is himself fully aware of what good and bad deeds his hands have wrought. [↩]
