Answer
Chaos may at times sweep us up in its tumultuous path to the point where we may lose control of our ethical bearings. However, once we anchor down and center ourselves again we should rectify the matter to the best of our ability. From the short description you have given it seems that there is little that you can do. Nevertheless, if your inner-self is poking at you enough then I recommend a prayer for expiation and give to charity. There is nothing better negating something wrong with something good and right. This suggestion is not a religious one; it is merely to a way to acknowledge to the self and to the Almighty that wrong was done and you are willing to correct it. Hopefully you will not have to deal with such circumstances but if it happens you will have built up the fortitude to figure out a better way.
As it pertains to your job, rest assured that – from your description – you are earning an honest living. Your job, even if it was related to your degree, made its earning based on the time and energy you committed to it and therefore is halal. It seems your work is appreciated and you are following an ethical code so you should have no concerns regarding your current situation. I applaud you for your moral acuity and wish you success in this life and the hereafter.
I hope this helps.
God knows best.
