What are the essential elements a khatib is required to perform when giving a khutba?
Like any public address, the Friday address does not have any essential elements, as such. However, the Qur’an has referred to the Friday address, as “Dhikr Allah” i.e. remembrance and reminder of God, which, in my understanding, indicates that the emphasis of the address should be on Dhikr Allah. Besides the remembrance and reminder of God, because the Friday address is delivered on behalf of the Muslim state, therefore it naturally focus on the collective affairs and circumstances of the citizens of the state.
I hope this helps.
