Is it a requirement for men to wear a kuufi1 all the time? was it a Sunnah of the Prophet (saw) to wear it? Was it included to be a part of dressing modestly? I was told by someone who wears it all the time that it is required just as women wear hijaab, so is the case with men?
Is this fardh for a person who follows the hanafi school of thought?
Any solid hadith from Bukhari, Muslim?
Before I give my reply to your specific question, I would like to explain in a few words what, in my opinion, is meant by the term “Sunnah” of the Prophet (pbuh).
The term “Sunnah” of the Prophet (pbuh) refers to those practical teachings of the Prophet (pbuh), which he taught to all those present before him, as a part of Islamic teachings. These teachings have been transferred to us, without any alteration, through the consensus and practical perpetuation of the companions (ra) of the Prophet (pbuh). Even today, there is consensus among Muslims regarding these practical teachings of the Prophet (pbuh) and to some extent there still exists a practical perpetuation on these issues too. The term “Sunnah“, in my opinion, should not be applied to any actions or sayings of the Prophet (pbuh) besides these teachings, even if the Prophet (pbuh) performed these ‘actions’ on a regular basis. Because if the Prophet (pbuh) did not include any of his actions in the basic corpus of religion, then no one besides him has the authority of doing so.
Keeping the above explanation in mind, we cannot term wearing a “Kuufi” a “Sunnah” of the Prophet (pbuh), because of the mere fact that the Prophet (pbuh) did not include it in the basic corpus of Islam.
According to the Hanafi school of thought, wearing a Kuufi is not obligatory (fardh).
