Al-Ma'arij

1-7
[Read out to them, O Prophet,] In the name of Allah, Mercy abundant, Mercy eternal. A fervent demander has sarcastically[1] asked for the great punishment[2] that shall befall these rejecters. [It shall indeed come to pass and when it comes,] no one shall be able to turn it away [from these rejecters]; [for] it shall be from the [Great] Lord of the ascending paths. [These rejecters are prone to judging God's decisions and their implementation by their own standards of time. Tell them that] the angels and Al-Rooh[3] ascend to Him in a day, the length of which is like fifty thousand years of your reckoning. Therefore, [O Prophet, in response to their sarcasm,] conduct yourself with becoming patience. [In their limited perspective,] they consider it[4] to be far off, while We see it quite near at hand.
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ سَأَلَ سَائِلٌ بِعَذَابٍ وَاقِعٍ(1)لِّلْكَافِرِينَ لَيْسَ لَهُ دَافِعٌ(2)مِّنَ اللَّهِ ذِي الْمَعَارِجِ(3)تَعْرُجُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَالرُّوحُ إِلَيْهِ فِي يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُ خَمْسِينَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ(4)فَاصْبِرْ صَبْرًا جَمِيلًا(5)إِنَّهُمْ يَرَوْنَهُ بَعِيدًا(6)وَنَرَاهُ قَرِيبًا(7)
8-18
[It will not be long before they shall see it too]. That day, when this sky shall be [red] as the sediment of oil and when these mountains shall be [frail] as carded cotton and even the closest of friends [at that time] shall not be concerned about [the well being of] another friend, even though they shall see each other. This criminal[5] would wish if he could only redeem himself from the [great] torment of that day by exchanging for himself his sons, his wife, his brother, his whole family - which provided him protection - and every person on earth, then, thereby, save himself from it. Absolutely not! It is a flaming Fire, stripping off the skin, calling every person who turned his back [upon the call of the messenger] and looked the other way [ignoring his warnings] and amassed riches and refused to spend it [to help others].
يَوْمَ تَكُونُ السَّمَاءُ كَالْمُهْلِ(8)وَتَكُونُ الْجِبَالُ كَالْعِهْنِ(9)وَلَا يَسْأَلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمًا(10)يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ ۚ يَوَدُّ الْمُجْرِمُ لَوْ يَفْتَدِي مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمِئِذٍ بِبَنِيهِ(11)وَصَاحِبَتِهِ وَأَخِيهِ(12)وَفَصِيلَتِهِ الَّتِي تُؤْوِيهِ(13)وَمَن فِي الْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا ثُمَّ يُنجِيهِ(14)كَلَّا ۖ إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ(15)نَزَّاعَةً لِّلشَّوَىٰ(16)تَدْعُو مَنْ أَدْبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ(17)وَجَمَعَ فَأَوْعَىٰ(18)
19-35
[O Prophet, they shall remain eager in their demands to see God's punishment, for] indeed man is made with an element of impatience: [As a result, if he does not train himself,] when evil afflicts him, he despairs and when good comes his way, he becomes miserly. [This is the case of man, in general,] but not the praying ones; the ones, who, with regard to their prayers are consistently regular; the ones in whose wealth is a determined right for those who ask for their help and [also those, whom they know to be] the needy; the ones, who believe in the Day of Judgment as a reality; the ones, who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord - undoubtedly, the punishment of their Lord is not something to feel secure from; the ones, who preserve their chastity - except from their spouses and from those, whom they own[6], for indeed there shall be no blame upon them, but whoever desires to go beyond this [limit], these indeed are the transgressors; the ones, who, with respect to their trusts and their agreements, are extremely conscious; the ones, who, in their testimonies, are upright; the ones, who, with respect to their prayers are overly guarding. These indeed shall be highly honored in gardens of bliss.
۞ إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا(19)إِذَا مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ جَزُوعًا(20)وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ الْخَيْرُ مَنُوعًا(21)إِلَّا الْمُصَلِّينَ(22)الَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ دَائِمُونَ(23)وَالَّذِينَ فِي أَمْوَالِهِمْ حَقٌّ مَّعْلُومٌ(24)لِّلسَّائِلِ وَالْمَحْرُومِ(25)وَالَّذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوْمِ الدِّينِ(26)وَالَّذِينَ هُم مِّنْ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشْفِقُونَ(27)إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمْ غَيْرُ مَأْمُونٍ(28)وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَافِظُونَ(29)إِلَّا عَلَىٰ أَزْوَاجِهِمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ(30)فَمَنِ ابْتَغَىٰ وَرَاءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْعَادُونَ(31)وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِأَمَانَاتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رَاعُونَ(32)وَالَّذِينَ هُم بِشَهَادَاتِهِمْ قَائِمُونَ(33)وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُونَ(34)أُولَٰئِكَ فِي جَنَّاتٍ مُّكْرَمُونَ(35)
36-39
[This shall most definitely come to pass and God shall most certainly honor the obedient.] But what is the matter with these rejecters, [that hearing this decree of the Almighty] they are dashing towards you, in crowds, from left and right [trying to overwhelm you and dissuade you from delivering this message]? Does each one of them expect to be entered in the blissful gardens [merely because he enjoys a high social standing in this world]? Absolutely not! [However honored they may consider themselves to be, but the fact is that] We have created them with that [lowly] material, which they are themselves well aware of.
فَمَالِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا قِبَلَكَ مُهْطِعِينَ(36)عَنِ الْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ الشِّمَالِ عِزِينَ(37)أَيَطْمَعُ كُلُّ امْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُدْخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِيمٍ(38)كَلَّا ۖ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاهُم مِّمَّا يَعْلَمُونَ(39)
40-41
But [in response to all this, they say that such a day shall never come to pass and that no one shall be able to raise the dead.] No! I bring to witness [the powers of the] Lord of all the vastness of the East and all the vastness of the West that most definitely We have the power to [resurrect them and to] replace them with a creation much better than they [now] are, and this shall not be beyond Our powers.
فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِرَبِّ الْمَشَارِقِ وَالْمَغَارِبِ إِنَّا لَقَادِرُونَ(40)عَلَىٰ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَيْرًا مِّنْهُمْ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ(41)
42-43
Therefore, [O Prophet,] leave them drowned in their sarcasm and in their fun and games until they come face-to-face with the day that they are warned against. The day, when they shall hasten out of their graves, as if they are racing towards [determined] marks [set for their race]. [Look at them!] Their eyes downcast [in shame]; they are overwhelmed with humiliation.
فَذَرْهُمْ يَخُوضُوا وَيَلْعَبُوا حَتَّىٰ يُلَاقُوا يَوْمَهُمُ الَّذِي يُوعَدُونَ(42)يَوْمَ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ الْأَجْدَاثِ سِرَاعًا كَأَنَّهُمْ إِلَىٰ نُصُبٍ يُوفِضُونَ(43)
44-44
This is the day, which they were warned against.
خَاشِعَةً أَبْصَارُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ الْيَوْمُ الَّذِي كَانُوا يُوعَدُونَ(44)
The normal preposition for the Arabic verb "سأل" (lit: "he asked") is "عن". In this verse, it is used with the preposition "ب", which implies sarcasm or impatience in the questioner's inquiry and demand. The complete sentence would be something like: "سأل سائل إستعجالا (أو مستعجلا) بعذاب واقع" (i.e. 'A fervent demander has eagerly asked for the punishment that shall befall') or "سأل سائل استهزاء (أو مستهزأ) بعذاب واقع" (i.e., 'An inquirer has sarcastically asked for the punishment that shall befall').
The rejecters among the direct addressees of the Prophet (pbuh) were warned of the same consequences, which were faced by the rejecters of the previous messengers of God - Noah, Shu`aib, Saalih, Moses, Jesus (pbut), etc... At hearing the Prophet's continual warnings, these arrogant rejecters would sometimes sarcastically retort with a demand to show them the punishment, which they were being warned against.
'Al-Rooh' is generally used for the angel Gabriel in the Qur'an.
i.e., the implementation of God's punishment.
i.e., this person, who is bent upon making fun of our revelation and warnings today.
The Arabic phrase "أو ما ملكت أيمانهم" is used for slaves.
