Question
As Salam O Alaykum
Please response in details but if it takes more then 2 weeks then just give a quick one …
We (me and my wife) would like to adopt a child in Canada from Pakistan. We don’t have any children untill now.
my questions are
- Is Adoption Leagle in Islam ( we know that we can’t be real parents according to Islam).
- What if we adopt a girl or boy. According to Islam, What things we need to take into conciderations when a girl or boy is adopted? Since most people say there is a problem of Mehram and Namehram.
- I heared that they don’t have any portion on our assets since they are not our real child but then what and how much can we give them?
- Our niyyah is to upbring an orphan inshaAllah. Any suggestions and advise you would like to give us, would be highly appreciated.

Jazak Allah Khair
Answer
- Islam does not forbid adoption. In fact, it encourages the incredible act of taking care of orphans and being such a commendable act, we consider it a form of worship, like all other good deeds. There is a context to why some forms of adoption are looked down upon as they relate to the usurpation of the adoptees’ rights. The Arabs in the 7th century used to adopt children so that they would seize their inheritance. This, of course, can happen today. In addition, every child deserves to know their lineage and from where they come. A deeper analysis would reveal the wisdom behind Islamic adoption. Please bear in mind that there are legal matters as they relate to the Shari’ah so please use the search feature on this site for detailed insight.
- There is no such problem with adopting either sex.
- Inheritance in Islam is set up so that certain people legally get what is entitled to them by God if the person who passed away did not leave instructions for it. Nevertheless, your adopted children may get whatever you wish for them to have if you state it explicitly in your will.
- I cannot commend you enough for your attitude and pray that God blesses you every step of the way. Adopted children are no different than the children that carry our blood. You give them love and shelter, you teach them what you know, you give a proper foundation and set them on their path to do their own good on this earth and pass it on to their own children. A child is a blessing regardless of how a person takes one up.
Such a self-less act is so beautiful it could only be praised. If more people cared and gave love as you plan to do this world would be an even better place.
I hope this helps.
God knows best.
