Regarding Aal Imraan 3: 14

I have a question for you and I hope you could help. Allah (SW) says in [Aal-Imran 3:14]:

Beautified for mankind is love of the joys (that come) from women and offspring; and stored-up heaps of gold and silver, and horses branded (with their mark), and cattle and land. That is comfort of the life of the world. Allah! With Him is a more excellent abode.

Could you please give me the interpretation for this ayyah.

Jazak Alluh Khairan,

The context of the verse is that there are people (reference is to the rejecters among the direct addressees of the Prophet) who, even after it has become manifest for them that Mohammed (pbuh) is a true prophet and messenger of God, are still not willing to accept his call and submit to the truth. In the referred verse, the Qur’an has pointed out some of the reasons why a person can be unwilling to accept the call of the messengers and submit to the truth.

All the reasons that have been mentioned in this verse, pertain to the natural inclinations of man. Whether it be the company of a spouse and children, whether it be the desire for riches and wealth and of all such things which make his life more comfortable and secure, all these things are a natural inclination and desire for man. Nevertheless, when the love of these things becomes a hindrance in accepting a submitting to the truth, then this love is no longer a virtue, but a vice.

The verse, in other words, entails the message that all emotions and desires, as long as they remain subservient to our faithfulness with God and His decisions and will, they are a blessing. But as soon as they become the overriding phenomena in one’s life, due to which faithfulness with God and submission to the truth becomes of secondary importance, they can then become the greatest hindrance in one’s success in the hereafter, which, in fact, is the real success.

I hope this helps.

Moiz Amjad
