The Coming of Another Prophet – the Meaning of Aal Imraan 3: 179

I was talking with one of my Ahmadi friends about the evidence in the Qur’an regarding the coming of another prophet after the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and he gave me the following verse of Surah aal Imraan.

Allah will not leave the believers (Muslims) in the state in which ye are now, until He separates what is evil from what is good nor will He disclose to you the secrets of the Unseen. But He chooses of His Messenger (for the purpose) whom He pleases. So, believe in Allah. And His Prophet: And if ye believe and do right, ye have a reward without measure. (verse 179)

According to him Allah is clearly addressing Muslims and is giving them a good news about the coming prophet and Allah is promising them that He will not leave the believers (Muslims) until He separates what is evil from what is good. Can you help me understanding this Surah?

Thanks and best regards

To fully understand the correct implication of the verse, it is important to keep in mind that from verse 121 onwards, the referred Surah has given the reasons for the defeat of the Muslims in the battle of Uhud. The referred verse has actually given one of the reasons for this defeat, which is that through such difficult circumstances God made a distinction between those who were sincere and truthful in their faith (good) and the hypocrites (evil). With this defeat, those people who were hiding their enmity of Islam in their hearts gained courage and, subsequently, their enmity became known to the Muslims. The verse goes on to say that the only other way of letting the Muslims know of the enmity that lay hidden in the hearts of the hypocrites was to inform the Muslims about the hidden grudges, which God does not like to do. Thus, it is in this background that the verse says:

It was not for God to leave you [the Muslims] in the state that you were in, until He separated the good from the evil; and it was not for God to inform you regarding the unseen, but [for the purpose of separation of the good from the evil,] God selects from amongst His messengers, whom He pleases…

The verse, obviously, has nothing to do with the coming of any messenger after Muhammad (pbuh).
