I understand that Islam teaches that Muhammad is the LAST MESSENGER. I know that the Qur’an teaches that Muhammad is the last prophet. IS THERE A VERSE IN THE QURAN THAT STATES THAT MUHAMMED IS THE LAST MESSENGER?
The Qur’an has called Mohammad “Khaatam al-Nabiyee’n” which means ‘seal of the prophethood’. Muslim scholars, from the beginning to date have interpreted that this phrase implies that Mohammad (pbuh) was the last prophet and no other prophet shall come after him.
Moreover, the Qur’an has categorically stated that the revelation of God’s deen has been perfected and thereby His favor to mankind has been completed (Al-Maaidah 5: 3)
Besides these express verses, the Qur’an does not require from us to wait for or to believe in any prophet after Mohammad (pbuh), which was the case in the Torah or the Gospels. Thus, if the Qur’an is a complete guidance and the Qur’an does not require from us to wait for or believe in any prophet after Mohammad (pbuh), then why should we do so?
As far as whether or not the phrase ‘The Last Prophet’ also implies the ‘Last Messenger’ please refer to one of my previously answered questions1.
