Regarding the Belief that the Prophet (pbuh) is Omnipresent and Omniscient

January 27, 2001

Question

Please can you clarify whether one is allowed to believe in the prophet as hazir1 -o- nazir2?

Thanks

Answer

As Muslims, we are supposed to believe what the Qur’an requires us to believe in. For being Muslims, we are neither required to believe in things, which are not specifically mentioned in the Qur’an, nor allowed to reject belief in things, which the Qur’an requires of us.

Attributing omnipresence and omniscience to the Prophet (pbuh) is completely alien to the Qur’an. The Qur’an has not even mentioned these attributes for the Prophet (pbuh). Thus, there is absolutely no basis of believing these attributes for the Prophet (pbuh).

I hope this helps.

  1. Believing the Prophet (pbuh) to be ‘Hazir’ is to believe that the Prophet (pbuh) is present everywhere. In other words, that the Prophet (pbuh) is omnipresent. [↩]
  2. Believing the Prophet (pbuh) to be ‘Nazir’ is to believe that the Prophet (pbuh) sees (and thus, knows) everything. In other words, that the Prophet (pbuh) is omniscient. [↩]
