[Read out to them, O Prophet,] In the name of Allah, Mercy abundant, Mercy eternal. Tell them [O Prophet,] that it has been revealed to me1 that [when] a band of Jinn heard this [Qur’an], they said [to their people]: ‘We have heard a fascinating Qur’an, guiding to the right path and [after hearing it,] we have believed in it2 and [now] we shall never associate any partners to our Lord’; And that [they said:] ‘Exalted is the glory of our Lord, He has neither taken for Himself a spouse nor an offspring’; And that [they said:] ‘Our crazy [priest] used to utter false things about God, and [we used to follow him blindly, only because] we thought that no man or jinn could tell lies about God’; And that [they said: ‘Many among humans were transgressing against their Lord.] Some [of these crazy] people among humans used to seek help from a few [evil] people among Jinn and [as a result,] they further increased them in their transgressions [against the Lord] and [their behavior was a clear evidence that] they too, like you, thought that God shall never raise anyone [after his death]’; And that [they said: ‘Before we had heard this Qur’an,] we examined the skies and found them filled with extremely strong guards and [chasing] meteors; while [before this] we used to sit in it at various places of eavesdrop [and would even succeed in getting bits of information], but now whoever tries to hear anything, finds a ball of fire waiting for himself’; And that [at that time] we did not know whether a punishment was intended for the people of the earth or had their Lord decided to bless them with guidance; And that [they said that] there were always pious among us and there were others [who were not pious, and even before this] we were followers of different paths; And that we were always mindful3 that we can neither get out of God’s control [hiding] in the earth, nor can we get out of His control running [in the skies]. And that [they said that with this awareness,] when we heard the guidance [of the Qur’an,] we believed in it and now we also invite you to accept faith, with the message that] whoever believes in his Lord, he shall not have any fear of either a loss or an injustice; And that [they said that after hearing this message of the Qur’an] there will be those among us, who shall submit [to this call] and [there will also be] those among us, who shall persist in disobedience. Now, whoever submits [to this call], have taken to guidance and as for those, who persist in disobedience, they shall be the fuel of the Hellfire. |

And [as for these rejecters, O Prophet, tell them] that had they kept to the path [of Tawheed4], we would have irrigated them in plenty – to test them with our blessings [in the life of this world]5; And [tell them that] whoever turns away from the admonition6 of their Lord, He shall subject them to a punishment that shall keep mounting in severity. And [also tell them] that these mosques have been made only for [the worship of] the One God, therefore do not call upon anyone besides God [in them]. And [even after being aware of this fact, how strange it is] that when the servant of God7 stands up [in His Mosque] to call upon Him alone, they crowd around him in multitudes [showing their disdain]. [O Prophet,] tell them: ‘[Whether you like it or not,] I call upon my Lord alone and I shall not associate any partner with Him’. Tell them: ‘I do not have control over any harm [or any benefit] for you, neither [do I have control] over guiding you [or leading you astray]’. Tell them: ‘[I am fully aware of the fact that if I associate partners with my Lord, then] neither shall anyone ever be able to protect me from God nor shall I ever be able to find any refuge besides Him’. [Tell them that I am not authorized to deliver the teachings that are in accordance with your desires. My duty is nothing] but to deliver the revelations from God and His messages and [to inform you with all clarity that] whoever disobeys God and His messenger, his would be the fire of Hell, he shall abide in it forever. [But, intoxicated by their strength and numbers, these rejecters shall continue to satirize your calls] till the time that they ultimately see that [punishment] which they are being warned against, then [at that time,] they shall truly find out who is weaker in support and fewer in numbers. [In response to the call of the Prophet, they sarcastically ask when shall the Prophet’s warning come to pass’.] Tell them [O Prophet,]: ‘I am not aware of whether the punishment that you are being warned against is close at hand or my Lord will allow some time before it. [This information relates to the ghayb – i.e., the hidden. He is] Aware of this ghayb and He does not reveal this ghayb to anyone. As for those, whom He selects as messengers, [they are not allowed to say anything regarding the timing of the implementation of this punishment, of their own accord] because He guards them from the front and from behind, to ascertain that they have delivered the messages of their Lord and He keeps a strict control over whatever is with them [in their surroundings] and keeps a strict count of all things8’. |

- It is clear from the style of these verses that the Prophet (pbuh) was informed about the following events only through revelation and was not directly aware of them. [↩]
- Whatever the source through which a person is convincingly informed about the Truth, he must submit to it. [↩]
- i.e., in contrast to the impious. [↩]
- i.e., the path of holding God clear of all associates and partners. [↩]
- None of the blessings during the life of this world are permanent in nature. These blessings, on the contrary, are a part of the test during the life of this world and a nation continues to benefit from these blessings only as long as it remains deserving of these blessings. [↩]
- i.e., the admonition revealed in the shape of the Qur’an. [↩]
- Reference is to the Prophet (pbuh). [↩]
- Nothing is out of God’s control. All the variables are in His control. He alone decides the timing of the implementation of the warned punishment, according to His absolute knowledge and control. [↩]
