United Kingdom: In Leeds, a chip shop combines halal and kosher

In Leeds (United Kingdom), a fish and chip shop like no other has become a symbol of interfaith dialogue. Born from a chance meeting between a rabbi and a Muslim entrepreneur, the restaurant Marlows British Kitchen offers both halal and kosher dishes. Opened in September 2025, the establishment attracts a diverse clientele, sometimes coming from very far away, seduced by this unique concept. Kosher dishes are prepared separately according to the strict rules of Judaism, with the supervision of a rabbi.

The restaurant offers a varied menu inspired by traditional British fish and chips, with dishes like fried fish with fries, but also more original options like spicy shrimp or chicken in Indian sauce with fries. There are also burgers, sausages and sides like mozzarella sticks. At the same time, a kosher menu is offered, prepared separately, with adapted versions such as fish and chips breaded with matzo meal, as well as typical accompaniments such as peas, pickles or beans.

Beyond the commercial success, the place stands out for its friendly atmosphere where all beliefs come together, with a simple rule: avoid political or religious discussions. The project required significant adaptation: strict separation of kitchens, respect for religious calendars and training of teams in complex dietary practices. Despite these constraints, the founders emphasize that this double certification has strengthened the attractiveness of the restaurant in a city with a large Jewish community. This collaboration goes beyond the culinary framework. It has enabled cultural and human exchanges between teams and clients, particularly during religious periods such as Ramadan, where everyone adapts to the practices of the other, thus strengthening links and mutual understanding.

This example shows that a simple restaurant can bring people of different religions together. By offering halal and kosher, it proves that it is possible to live together despite differences. In a context where there are often tensions, this place offers a calm and positive space. The rule of not talking about politics or religion helps keep a good atmosphere. Finally, this project also shows that diversity can be a strength: by adapting to several cultures, the restaurant attracts more customers and functions well.
