Heatwave, unemployment, debt, international crisis… and the RN still makes the veil a priority

France is crumbling under emergencies: public debt, unemployment, purchasing power, public services in difficulty, climate crisis, international tensions. But to listen to Jordan Bardella, the emergency would be elsewhere: the veil. The veil again. Always the veil. Guest of LCI on September 4, 2026, the president of the RN declared that “the veil is not desirable in French society” and announced that he wanted to extend the existing ban in schools to minors as well as to all buildings with a public service mission. He also said he wanted to then organize a referendum which could lead to a ban in “the entire public sphere”.

While the French worry about their jobs, their bills and the future of the country, the RN is methodically preparing new restrictions targeting Muslim women first. No miracle plan against the debt, no referendum on poverty, no major offensive against medical deserts: on the other hand, to regulate the dress of Muslim women, the RN already has its timetable. France is going into debt, suffocating under heatwaves, and going through social and international crises. But listening to the RN, the great national danger would finally have a face: that of a Muslim woman who wears a veil.

When a party comes to make a piece of fabric one of the great emergencies of the nation, it is no longer just the veil that must be looked at. This is the Islamophobic obsession.
