Indonesia: Jakarta inaugurates An-Nur, a “floating” mosque on the sea

Erected above the sea in the Ancol district, North Jakarta, the An-Nur Mosque was inaugurated on Friday October 16, 2026 by Governor Pramono Anung. The faithful performed their first Friday prayer there the same day. With a surface area of 2,241 m², it can accommodate 600 people: 460 men and 140 women. An outdoor esplanade offers an additional capacity of 300 worshippers.
The originality of An-Nur lies in its location above the water, which gives it the appearance of a floating mosque. Opening onto the maritime horizon, the building offers a unique setting for prayer. This proximity to the sea extends its architectural concept: an “arch of faith”, whose five-sided shape recalls the five pillars of Islam and the five daily prayers.
Launched in 2019 under the mandate of Anies Baswedan, the project was delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic, before work resumed in 2024. The authorities want to make this mosque a new emblematic place on the coast of Jakarta, combining religious practice, meetings and tourism. Open to the public, it must also host various religious activities.
