United States: he denounces the genocide in Gaza, a Democratic elected official betrays Abdul El-Sayed and joins Trump’s candidate

Two days before the November 3 elections, Haley Stevens chose to support Republican Mike Rogers against Abdul El-Sayed, his own party’s candidate for the Senate in Michigan. A turnaround against a backdrop of deep differences regarding Israel, followed by a record fundraising announced by the Muslim candidate’s team.

Defeated by Abdul El-Sayed during the Democratic primary in August, Haley Stevens initially gave him her support. On Sunday, November 1, the representative from Michigan announced her support for Mike Rogers, supported by Donald Trump. A decision that angered Democratic officials, including Chuck Schumer, who called it a “betrayal.”

At the heart of this rupture: Israel and Palestine. A fervent defender of Israel, Haley Stevens opposes the positions of Abdul El-Sayed, who denounces the genocide in Gaza and criticizes American military aid granted to Israel. She notably denounced an advertisement from an independent group favorable to the candidate, linking American military aid to Israel to the economic difficulties of households, and questioned her links with commentator Hasan Piker.

This support for the opposing camp comes at a time when El-Sayed is suffering attacks targeting his religion. Donald Trump and Republican officials notably presented him, without proof, as a “radical jihadist” or a supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood. But Stevens’ turnaround was also followed by financial mobilization: El-Sayed’s team claims to have raised $2.4 million on Sunday, its best fundraising day of the campaign. An amount announced by his team, which however does not prejudge the outcome of the polls.
