History: Aber Kawas, a Palestinian elected to the New York State Senate

Aber Kawas won the election in the 12th New York State Senate District, located in Queens. This victory makes her the first Muslim woman of Palestinian origin elected to the Parliament of this state, a historic step for the political representation of this community. Born in New York into a family of Palestinian refugees, this community activist placed affordable housing, the defense of tenants and the rights of immigrants at the heart of her campaign. Its commitment is based on more than fifteen years of mobilization with New York residents and workers.
His journey is also marked by a painful family history: during his youth, his father was detained and then deported from the United States, leaving his family in financial difficulties. An experience that she presents as decisive in her commitment to the defense of immigrants and working-class families. Supported by Zohran Mamdani and the Democratic Socialists of New York, Aber Kawas will now bring these fights to Albany, where the State Legislature sits. Her victory also gives new visibility to an elected official committed to Palestinian rights.
“We wrote history”: it was with these words, accompanied by the Palestinian flag 🇵🇸, that Aber Kawas celebrated his victory over X on November 4. A widely relayed message, which already had 1.9 million views.
