“A deliberate desire to starve the population”: Rony Brauman accuses Israel of genocide

On France Info, Rony Brauman spoke without detour. The former president of Doctors Without Borders denounced what he calls a “Organized famine” In the Gaza Strip. “It’s not just the obstruction of humanitarian convoys”he said, “it is also the destruction of all daily survival means.”

He recalls that “More than 80 to 95 % of Gaza’s agricultural land has been methodically destroyed by the Israeli army”. A policy that cannot, according to him, be explained by security considerations: “What security problem could the agricultural land pose? We can see that it was a deliberate desire to starve the Palestinian population.”

For Rony Brauman, the observation is unambiguous: “This directly enters into the qualification of crime against humanity and crime of genocide.” And to point the Israeli Prime Minister directly: “Netanyahu will have to answer it. Naturally, he will try, and he succeeds successfully, to escape justice. Nevertheless: Netanyahu is a criminal on the run, and the ministers of his government are just as much.” The former humanitarian, who says he is a doctor and not a lawyer, underlines that this analysis is widely shared: “Many experts in international law and criminal law, as well as historians, including Israelis, Holocaust specialists, also consider that the facts are the genocide.”

By recalling that Israeli historians of the Shoah themselves speak of genocide, Rony Brauman highlights an unbearable truth: what takes place in Gaza is not a “collateral tragedy” but rather a deliberate, methodical and planned policy. The impunity from which Israel benefits, despite manifest violations of international law, reveals the moral bankruptcy of Western powers. By invoking the memory of the Shoah while closing their eyes on the crushing of the Palestinian people, they are exposed to a historical discredit which will pursue them for a long time.
