A famous American Muslim theologian calls out Elon Musk for his Islamophobic remarks”
Omar Suleiman, theologian and president of the Yaqeen Institute for Islamic Research (Islamic research institute based in Texas), publicly called out Elon Musk regarding his recent controversial stances on Islam. Recognized for his interreligious commitment, notably during the hostage taking at the Colleyville synagogue in 2022 where he volunteered as a negotiator, the imam received honors from the Texas House of Representatives for his role in this crisis.
In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), he denounces the distribution of “dangerous” and “dishonest” content by the billionaire. “When a Tesla causes an accident, you are quick to denounce media bias. However, for a week, you have been relaying every Islamophobic stereotype imaginable,” underlines Suleiman, who is proposing a constructive dialogue with the Tesla boss.
This intervention follows Musk’s controversial involvement in the British debate on “grooming gangs”, where he focused on the Pakistani and Muslim origins of some accused, ignoring official statistics from the British Home Office. The latter show that 88% of cases involve white men, compared to 7% of men of Asian origin.
The billionaire, future external advisor to the Trump administration, was also noted for his attacks against British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and his calls to “liberate” the British people from his “tyrannical government”.
