Attempting to burn down a mosque with worshipers praying constitutes a terrorist attack

The CFCM strongly condemns the attempted arson targeting, this Saturday January 13, 2024, the Saint-Martin-des-Champs mosque in Finistère. This premeditated attack took place at a specific time of prayer and attendance at the mosque by the faithful.

The CFCM expresses its total support and full solidarity to the faithful and those responsible for the mosque who are extremely shocked and traumatized by this attack and calls on Muslims in France to be extremely vigilant.

CCTV footage shows an individual spraying the door of the mosque with a flammable liquid before lighting the fire. The rapid intervention of the firefighters made it possible to avoid real carnage among the faithful.

The CFCM considers that these elements constitute a terrorist attack. He wants the criminal investigation, underway for “attempted destruction by dangerous means”, to be reclassified and for the anti-terrorism prosecution to take it up.

Far from any victimhood posture, the CFCM is surprised that the seriousness of this premeditated attack was not taken into account in political reactions and media coverage.

French people of Muslim faith, targeted as a whole by this attack, are also entitled to expect the same national solidarity due to their fellow citizens in similar circumstances.

This treatment is not likely to reassure the Muslims of France in the face of the increase in hostile acts of which they are victims. It also sends a message of impunity, both to those who display their anti-Muslim hatred through words and to those who take action.
