Call to action: save Um Qussa co-educational school in Masafer Yatta
On Sunday, June 18, 2023, Khirbet Um Qussa Primary School in Masafer Yatta in the South Hebron Hills received a demolition order from the Israeli Civil Administration (ICA) in Occupied Palestine.
In Masafer Yatta, 1,300 people are threatened with forced displacement by Israel, which has decided to transform their ancestral lands into a firing zone for the occupying army.
If the demolition of Khirbet Um Qussa school takes place, it will be the third school to be demolished in less than a year. Last month, on May 7, Israeli bulldozers demolished the Jib Al-Theeb school in the Bethlehem district. A few months earlier, on November 23, the Israeli authorities razed the As-Sfai school in Masafer Yatta.
Defending Khirbet Um Qussa School from impending Israeli demolition will also protect the five other schools threatened with demolition by Israel in Masafer Yatta, as well as several other schools in the Jordan Valley and beyond.
The Palestinian popular resistance movements call for the mobilization of the solidarity movement to save the Um Qussa school and put an end to the Israeli ethnic cleansing.

Madam Minister / Mr. Consul General
I am writing to denounce the impending Israeli demolition of the Khirbet Um Qussa school in Masafer Yatta (South Hebron Hills).
On Sunday, June 18, 2023, the school received an order from the Israeli Civil Administration (ICA) to demolish the school, under the pretext that it was built without a permit. Israeli authorities routinely deny these permits to Palestinians, while granting building permits and subsidies to a growing number of illegal Jewish-only settlements.
We urge you to ensure that the Palestinian right to education in Masafer Yatta, and beyond, is upheld by pressuring the Israeli government to meet its legal obligations as the occupying power.
We urge you to use all diplomatic channels to ensure that the Israeli government refrains from demolishing the Khirbet Um Qussa school, as well as other threatened schools in Masafer Yatta and Area C in general.
Before the school was built, children walked eight kilometers to and from Az-Zwaidan school. A precarious journey, in nature, where illegal and violent Israeli settlers threaten the safety of children.
If the demolition of the Khirbet Um Qussa school takes place, it will be the third school demolished in less than a year. Last month, on May 7, Israeli bulldozers demolished the Jib Ath-Theeb school in the Bethlehem district. A few months earlier, on November 23, the Israeli authorities razed the As-Sfai school in Masafer Yatta.
Pending your urgent response, please accept, Madam Minister / Mr. Consul General, the expression of my best regards,
