Can I Pray For My Death?

April 22, 2011

Question

Can I Pray for my death? I don’t want to live more. I cannot understand why i come this world. I cannot do any thing as I want. I want help poor people. I want visit poor people. But I cannot. Because I am married. And I am suffering from it. I am totally upset. Can you guide me? and also tell me is it right that i can pray for my die.

Answer

From the religious point of view there is nothing to stop you from praying for your own death.

However the reason you want to do this does not seem sound to me.

You wrote you did not understand why you came to this world. The reason is very obvious if we look at the Qur’an. We came to this world to be challenged (67:2) and by this we will be able to strive in the path of purification (91:9) and therefore serve the purpose of our creation that is to be God’s servant (51:56). By being God’s servant we will be able to satisfy Him and become good enough to get as close to Him as possible, that is, being in heaven (98:8).

If you appreciate the above, then you will understand that it does not matter if you cannot do what you wish to do. What matters is if you do well in what you can do.

No matter what your conditions are, you will always be challenged in your life to make the right decision, do the right thing, say the right thing, etc…

Even the realisation of the above is a challenge, a challenge that I hope you will be able to successfully pass.

If you successfully pass that challenge then I think instead of praying for your death you will pray to God to give you a long life in His obedience, which will insha’Allah provides you with more opportunities to earn his satisfaction and therefore paradise for yourself.
