Did the Prophet (pbuh) Ever Recite the Adhan (Call to Prayer)?

November 10, 2002

Question

Did Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)ever recite or make the “ADHAN” by himself ? if yes, please give any reference and if not, then what was the reason ?

Answer

The Prophet (pbuh) had appointed people to recite Adhan.

As the basic purpose of Adhan is to call people to prayer in a voice loud enough to reach maximum number of people of the locality, it was necessary that the person who called the Adhan should have a strong and loud voice.

However, it is also reported in some narratives that the Prophet (pbuh) himself recited Adhan sometimes. He is reported to call the Adhan in the ears of Hassan at his birth (Sha`bul-Imaan1 No: 8617 and in Al Mustadrak `al Sahihain No: 4827). He is also reported to have called Adhan for prayer after his famous sermon during his last pilgrimage (Sahih of Ibn-e-Habban No: 3944). Another tradition tells us that the Prophet used to call Adhan during his journeys and lead prayer (Al-Ahadith al-Mukhtarah No: 21072).

I hope this helps.
