Donald Trump says the United States must take control of Gaza
Donald Trump says he wants the United States to take control of the Gaza Strip and redevelop it after reinstalling the Palestinians in other countries. “The United States will take control of the Gaza Strip, and we will do good work with it. We will be the owners and we will be responsible for the dismantling of all the dangerous unplodced bombs and the other weapons that are on the site ”said the American president at a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
He added that the United States would be working to develop the region economically after cleaning the destroyed buildings. “I don’t think people should go back”Donald Trump said. “You can’t live in Gaza right now. I think we need another place. I think you need a place that makes people happy ”.
An initiative that would constitute “a radical violation of international law, including Geneva Conventions”, according to Evangeline Cheng, associate researcher at the Middle East Institute of the National University of Singapore.
In a declaration in Al Jazeera, Evangelinecheng stressed that this project could exacerbate tensions in the region and harm the relations of the United States with their Arab allies. “Such an idea would unwind both the Arab populations and allies, while bringing an additional blow to the image of the United States in the Middle East, already very weakened by the unconditional support of the previous administration in Israel in the conflict in Gaza ”she explained.
Trump’s approach contrasts with international efforts to establish post-Hamas governance in the Palestinian enclave. “Rather than supporting a governance model after Hamas, Trump advocates total evacuation, which reflects a maximalist position close to that of the Israeli far right”continued Cheng.
Even if a massive displacement of the inhabitants of Gaza did not materialize, “The adoption of a hard line by Trump could indirectly serve Israel by making the idea of a displacement of Gazaouis more acceptable in the public debate”, she warned.
