First US sanction against Israel

Although modest, a first small sanction has just been taken against Israel by the USA. The Biden administration informed Israel on Sunday that the United States would not transfer any funds to research institutes or science and technology projects taking place in settlements in the occupied West Bank.

The US announcement, first reported by Israel’s Kan public radio, reverses the policy that former President Donald Trump implemented in the final weeks of his term. It is linked both to Israeli announcements of expansion of colonization and to the recent pogroms against the Palestinians.

According to Haaretz, the directive should first influence Ariel University, which is the largest academic institution operating in Israeli settlements.
