Flotilla for Gaza: a boat challenges genocide
The coalition of the flotilla for freedom has chartered a new ship carrying several public figures and basic necessities in the direction of Gaza, intending to break the Israeli blockade and denounce the genocide in progress.
A new crew of the “flotilla for freedom” embarked yesterday at the port of Catania in Sicily, in the direction of Gaza. Among them and they are public or political figures like Greta Thunberg or Rima Hassan, but also Omar Faiad, journalist and presenter for Al Jazeera, Brazilian activist Thiago ávila, or German activist Yasemin Acar. A dozen people in all, to “denounce the humanitarian blockade and the current genocide, the impunity which the State of Israel benefits, and to raise awareness of global and international opinion”.
The flotilla for freedom is an international coalition of organizations from civil society founded in 2010. For years, it has intended to go around the Israeli blockade by charting on ships towards Gaza, to provide humanitarian aid and evacuate injuries. In addition to these deliveries apparently dedicated to failure, the coalition intends above all to visit its political plea in favor of the lifting of the blockade and the end of the Israeli occupation.
Last May, a ship of the flotilla was the target of a drone attack in the open sea, in international waters off the coast of Malta. The activists affirms that Israel is responsible for this attack and denounce “a blatant violation of international law”: “” The Israeli regime has perpetrated a new act of composure and a new flagrant violation of international law by attacking the flotilla, targeting humanitarian workers in international waters, far from its coast, at the very moment when the CIJ holds audiences. “Said Craig Mokhiber, a former United Nations US human rights official and a specialist in international law.
“It is the arrogance of impunity. He continues. “The endless impunity granted to the regime by the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and other accomplice states is responsible for the increasingly numerous atrocities committed by the regime. The scheme must be isolated, decree and required to account urgently, for our property to all. »»
When they are asked if they and they fear being attacked in their turn during their crossing, the activists embedded this Sunday aboard the flotilla declared themselves conscious of the risk, but determined. “My conscience forbids me to be inactive in the face of the occupation, which makes me sick … I am not afraid that they kill me,” replies actor Liam Cunningham. “I am not afraid of death and even less of Israel. If they want to kill me that they do it, I will leave having done my part, “said MEP Rima Hassan on his X account on May 28.
A support campaign was launched on social networks, encouraging user to relay a visual providing support for the flotilla and demanding the end of the humanitarian blockade and the end of the genocide in Gaza. “To guarantee our security, but also the success of our mission, we need citizen mobilization to be maximum during this initiative,” explains Rima Hassan, who calls for massively using the hashtags #FreEdomflotilla and #StopGenocide.
