Genocide in Gaza: Amnesty launches petition and urges France to end Israel’s impunity

Amnesty International launched a petition titled “Genocide in Gaza: France must put an end to Israel’s impunity!” »calling on the French authorities to act while the war in Gaza has continued since October 2023. The mobilization, open until February 28, 2026, has already gathered more than 129,000 signatures, with the aim of reaching 150,000.
“Mr. President of the Republic, the Israeli authorities have committed and continue to commit acts prohibited by the Convention for the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide (1948) with the intention of destroying, in whole or in part, the Palestinian population of Gaza” : it is with these first lines that the NGO challenges the French executive, evoking a “genocide in progress” in the Gaza Strip. In this text, Amnesty accuses Israel of leading since October 7, 2023 a campaign marked, according to it, by massive destruction of civilian infrastructure, serious harm to civilians and the use of famine as a “weapon of war”in a territory subject to a total blockade. The organization describes a population trapped in an increasingly small enclave, forced into forced displacement under bombardment.
The petition recalls the provisional measures ordered from January 26, 2024 by the International Court of Justiceconsidering that they have not been applied despite their legally binding nature. Amnesty calls on France to act without waiting for a final decision, in particular by ceasing all transfers of arms to Israel so as not, according to it, to become complicit in the crimes denounced.
The text also invokes the procedures underway before the International Criminal Courtwho issued arrest warrants against the Israeli Prime Minister on November 21, 2024 Benjamin Netanyahu and the former Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Amnesty calls on France to cooperate fully, to use universal jurisdiction, to facilitate humanitarian aid to Gaza and to demand the immediate release of all hostages still held.
