How Do We Know This?

July 11, 2003

Question

Salamon Alaykom,

In your reply to my question on the story of Fadak and the hadith by the holy prophet about those annoy Fatimah (RA) you said: “The narrated sentence is only an expression of love and affection of a father for his daughter and should not be taken as a principle to judge others’ position as well as opinions on religious matters. ” I would like to know how we can be certain that the narrated sentence is ONLY an expression of love and affection of a father for his daughter? How can we make sure that the prophet has said this in a capacity of a FATHER only and not in a capacity of a PROPHET?

Thanks

Answer

Had the sentence been said in the capacity of a Prophet (pbuh), it would then require a clear basis in the Qur’an, the Sunnah. Without such a basis, this comment can obviously not be interpreted as a part of God’s religion.

I hope this helps.
