India: an assaulted Muslim woman and her veil torn off by Hindutva extremists
In the state of the Uttar Pradesh, located in the north of India and one of the most populated in the country, a Muslim woman was violently attacked by Hindutva activists, who is a nationalist Hindu ideology which aims to make India a nation dominated by Hindu identity. While walking alongside the Hindu colleague of her mother, she was taken to task, and her veil (Hijab) was torn from her in an act of deliberate humiliation. The deeply shocking incident is part of a series of similar acts which aim to intimidate and publicly humiliate members of the Muslim community. This type of harassment, which has become sadly common, reflects the disturbing rise in religious intolerance in current India, under the government of Narendra Modi. The assaults carried out in the street by groups adhering to Hindutva ideology seem to enjoy almost an impunity, fueling a climate of fear and division within Indian society. These acts are not isolated, but the symptoms of an increasingly polarized political and social context, where religious extremism threatens the fundamental rights of citizens.
