Jean-Noël Barrot: “Gaza is now a dying man where the bodies wear the stigma of famine and the spirits are gangrene by terror”

At the United Nations, at an international conference on the Palestinian issue co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, Jean-Noël Barrot, French Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs, made an endless observation. “Gaza is a dying man. The bodies bear the stigmata of famine, the spirits are gangrenous by terror, “said the minister. He also denounced in the West Bank “colonization (which) progresses, led by extremist settlers who snatch the olive trees, burn harvests, hunt the Palestinian families weapon in the fist”, with the complicity of the Israeli authorities.
Jean-Noël Barrot considered that “the sprawl of the territory makes it impossible for the existence of a viable Palestinian state”, recalling that the recent voting of the Knesset in favor of the total annexation of the West Bank confirms a fait accompli. “The two-state solution is in danger of death,” he warned, pointing out of the extremes “on the one hand the supporters of a great Israel, on the other those of Palestine from the Jordan to the sea on one side,”, and the risk of “perpetual confrontation”.
By breaking with a certain language of diplomatic wood, France highlights a political dead end that many still refuse to name. “To this, France can in no case be resolved and we can no longer wait because time plays against peace,” insisted Jean-Noël Barrot, stressing that “it is illusory to hope for a perennial cease-fire without drawing a common post-war vision in Gaza, without drawing a political horizon”. A strong message, which questions: will it be followed by effect or will there be an isolated cry in the face of the silence of certain chancelleries? However, France is not completely isolated: to date, 148 of the 193 UN member states officially recognize the state of Palestine.
