Texas Republican Representative Don Gill Criticized for Islamophobic Remarks Against Journalist Mehdi Hasan

Texas Republican lawmaker Don Gill is the subject of an outcry after telling British-American journalist Mehdi Hasan to “go back to the UK” following an exchange on X about the Muslim call to prayer in the United States.
It all started with a message from Mehdi Hasan, director of Zeteo, an independent American news media, who said: “If you can ring your church bells, we can ring the call to prayer. We are as American as anyone else. Gill responded scornfully, saying his presence was transforming “American public life”, before adding: “If you want to live in a Muslim country, go back to the UK. »
Internet users reacted strongly, recalling that the call to prayer like church bells are protected by the American First Amendment. Others denounced “a total lack of Christian tolerance”. This is not the first time that Gill has unleashed controversy: he had already sparked outrage by mocking an elected official of Indian origin for eating rice with his hands – an attack deemed racist and hypocritical, given his family ties with India by his wife, Danielle D’Souza Gill.
My wife is a Christian and doesn’t want to hear your oppressive Muslim prayer calls, either.
If you want to live in a Muslim country, go back to the UK. https://t.co/LxmBfedAzx
