The Algerian president creates a surprise: he decides to hold an early presidential election on September 7

He can boast of creating a surprise in Algeria, but also on the other side of the Mediterranean, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced yesterday, Thursday March 21, the holding of a presidential election “anticipated” on September 7, 2024, three months before the initially planned date.

“It was decided to organize an early presidential election on September 7, 2024”indicated the Presidency of the Republic in an official press release published on the APS website, following a meeting chaired by the Head of State, alongside his Prime Minister, of the heads of the two Chambers of Parliament, the Chief of Staff of the army and the President of the Constitutional Court.

Remember that the last presidential election, which brought Abdelmadjid Tebboune to power with 58% of the votes, took place on December 12, 2019. As his five-year term ends in December, speculation is rife about the reasons which prompted the Algerian president to advance the organization of the supreme election. Is he planning, at 78, to bow out to pass the torch to a political and generational renewal, or on the contrary is he seeking a second term? The near future will tell…
