Time Limit for Shortening Prayer

April 3, 2011

Question

Assalamualikum,

I have guests from another country. Their departure date is not confirmed and it depends on their visa renewal. Presently they have come for 29 days. If their visa is extended, they will stay for another 14 days.

Should they offer Qasr Salah or Full Salah for the initial 29 days. In case their visa is extended should they offer Qasr or Full Salah for the remaining 14 days?

Thanks in advance and JazakAllah for your quick response.

Answer

Wa Alaykumu Salam,

The qasr (i.e. shortening) of prayer is merely to alleviate the traveler from any undue burden caused by traveling. If one finds that they are comfortable and are able to perform their prayers then there is no reason to shorten them. If one finds that, while being on travel, they are comfortable enough to perform their prayers in full, then one may read it in full..

The shortening of prayers could be done for the initial 29 days and the additional 14 days. However, please keep in mind that the shortening and combining of prayers is discretionary. Islam does not obligate the Muslim to shorten or combine their prayers; it is merely an amenity. As long as the person is traveling, it is their prerogative to use it.

I hope this helps.

God knows best.
