Tribute to François Gèze: an eminent French publisher and great friend of the Algerian people has passed away

He has just left the vast stage of life which he lit up in the warm light of his humanism and benevolence, the eminent French publisher François Gèze, 75, passed away on Monday August 28, 2023.

Forty years after founding the prestigious Editions La Découverte, driven by an inexhaustible thirst for understand the world to refuse the unacceptable »this man of progress and enlightened intellectual, born in Casablanca, who was one of the few in France to be moved by the terrible fate suffered by the Algerian people during the black decade, without ever shrinking from slander, ‘is off.

François Gèze, one of the founders of Algeria Watch, an association for the defense of human rights in Algerialeaves behind an immense void, but also the lasting memory of a being loving justice and freedom, unconditionally placed on the side of the oppressed, the most vulnerable, the damned of the earth…

It is with emotion that the Oumma team learned the sad news of the disappearance of the man who managed Editions La Découverte from 1982 to 2014, and would like to offer its most sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.

An emotion all the greater since in 2019, François Gèze had the heyday of OummaTV, on the set of the show L’Spirit of News, by shedding light on the Hirak. He particularly praised the remarkable lucidity of the Algerians.

In homage to this illustrious publisher, fine connoisseur of Algeria and unwavering ally of its people, whose anti-imperialist fiber never ceased to vibrate throughout a busy and committed existence, we are broadcasting the interview he had done the honor of granting to Umma four years ago.
