Two Israeli NGOs accuse Israel of genocide in Gaza

Two large Israeli NGOs for human rights, B’tselem and Physicians for Human Rights Israel (PHRI) accused Israel on Monday of committing a genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza, during a press conference in Jerusalem. This is the first time that Israeli organizations have employed this term with such clarity.
In a 79 -page overwhelming report, B’tselem claims to have reached this “unequivocal conclusion” after having analyzed Israeli policy in the Gaza Strip, its catastrophic consequences, as well as the declarations of senior Israeli political and military officials and military. “Nothing prepares you to realize that you are part of a company that commits a genocide. It’s a deeply painful moment, “said Yuli Novak, executive director of B’tselem.
The report describes a strategy based on massacres of civilians, the deliberate creation of untenable living conditions, the massive destruction of infrastructure, the disintegration of the social fabric, mass arrests, torture, and large -scale forced trips, which the NGO qualifies as attempted ethnic cleaning. He says that reality on the ground cannot be justified by an objective of dismantling Hamas.
For its part, Phri has published a medico-legal analysis detailing a systematic destruction of the health system in Gaza, making the survival of the injured and the patients almost impossible. It speaks of a deliberate and methodical policy, aimed at harming the Palestinian population “as a group”, which corresponds to the legal definition of genocide according to the UN Convention.
The two NGOs also point to the responsibility of the international community, accused of having enabled the genocide by supporting Israel militarily or by affirming its “right to self -defense”, even after the International Court of Justice estimated in January that there was a “plausible risk” of genocide.
The report is based on 20 months of documentation, including thousands of cases of murders, injuries, destruction, tortures and serious human rights violations, throughout the territory, including in the West Bank, in East Jerusalem and Israel.
In this context, the accusations carried by B’tselem and Phri – two structures deeply rooted in Israeli society – are all the more impactful since they cannot be dismissed as simple external or anti -Semitic criticism. They are added to the numerous international convictions, especially those of the UN, of which experts said that Israeli driving in Gaza presents the characteristics of a genocide, and those of Amnesty International, which estimated to have sufficient evidence to conclude a current genocide. NGOs like Human Rights Watch had also already denounced the use of famine as a weapon of war, strengthening the observation of an extreme gravity crime.
