Using Different Languages In Prayer

May 22, 2011

Question

Selam

As i understand according to your opinion only the parts of salah that are recited loud should be recitid in arabic and stricktly as the prophet did
now my question is can i recite rabbena lakal hamd in another language then arabic even so that recited same words there and can i exempel in ruku say insted of subhana rabbil azim something else that comes in my mind some dhikr that i self come up with.

Regards

Answer

Wa Alaykumu Salam

The only parts of prayer that should be recited in Arabic are the Qur’anic verses. All other parts, including the Tashahud, can be recited in one’s desired language. You are also permitted to replace the glorification as you wish, though I would not recommend it as it would seem the Prophet (pbuh) gave us the best expression for those moments. An alternative would be to add to them what comes from your heart but that is up to you.

I hope this helps.

God knows best.
