Using Euphemisms In Islam: “Jeez”

May 7, 2011

Question

Is saying the word “jeez” deemed as wrong? (as it may be in reference to Jesus pbuh)

Answer

The interjection “jeez” is indeed a euphemistic contraction of the name of Jesus (pbuh). Generally speaking, we are to refrain from calling out to others. However, this American euphemism is merely an expression of emotion. It is neither used to call on Jesus nor is it seeking other than God. It is merely a communication. Others may find fault in it but since you are not calling on anyone then we do not find that it corresponds with the reasons for the objections of other invocations. “Jeez,” in context, is no different than “hooray” or “shucks.”

I hope this helps.

God knows best.
