When May We Pay Zakat al-Fitr?

August 25, 2011

Question

Assalamualaikum.

I have two questions:

  1. We know that the preferred deadline for the Fitra to be distributed is before going to the prayer of Eid-ul-fitr. However, when can we start distributing the Fitra.
  2. I had brought water of Zam Zam in 2007 from Mecca. However, due to my negligence, some water could not be distrubted and is still with me. It has been long since and it is kept in a Jar. What should I do with it since it has been long I’ve brought it. Just afraid, it may be contaminated by now.

May Allah bless you.

Answer

Wa Alaykumu Salam

  1. Zakat al-Fitr can be distributed as early as the first day of Ramadan.
  2. There is nothing religious about the water or what you do with it. If you believe that it could be contaminated then you should get rid of it. However, if you feel that you would like to still give something then you can give charity in its place.

I hope this helps.

God knows best.
