2034 World Cup: Riyadh unveils its futuristic 92,000-seat stadium

Riyadh, the flagship city of the wealthy desert kingdom, will have a new sports venue of international stature. The project, entrusted to the Populous architectural firm, should see the light of day in 2029, in time for the potential organization of the 2034 World Cup. (see presentation clip below)

The Saudi authorities have unveiled, not without pride, the first sketches of this imposing multi-sports complex which will include, in addition to the main stadium, an athletics center and aquatic facilities meeting Olympic standards. The architecture is inspired by the natural landscapes of the region, with lines evoking the local relief.

The project incorporates significant innovations, including an accessible roof terrace offering views of the adjacent urban park. The infrastructure will also include VIP spaces and high-end reception areas to meet the standards of major international competitions.

The architectural concept, symbolizing a seed that blooms, reflects a desire for sporting development at all levels. This plant metaphor is found in the exterior design of the stadium, whose fragmented structure recalls natural patterns. This new Saudi project, futuristic and pharaonic, is part of a broader plan for the development of sports facilities in the region, with the stated ambition of hosting the 2034 World Cup, for which the country is a candidate.
