Iran: a regime endowed with “enormous resilience”, according to researcher Benoît Grémare
The Iranian regime has a “relatively strong structure” allowing it to ensure continuity of power despite external pressures, said Benoît Grémare, associate researcher at the Institute of Strategy and Defense Studies, in an interview with France Info. Referring to the “Iranian scenario”, the researcher judged that if it remains “quite particular”, history offers numerous precedents, citing in particular the cases of Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya. However, he stressed, Iran stands out for the solidity of its state structures.
According to him, despite the emergence of new generations, the old elites are “still there”, with “other ayatollahs ready to take power”, which reinforces the continuity of the regime. Benoît Grémare also believes that the American strategy aims to “undermine Iranian power”, particularly in relation to the nuclear issue. But, he insisted, the Iranian state has already demonstrated “enormous resilience” in the past. “So it will last,” he concluded.
