London Mayor Sadiq Khan completes Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, traveled to Mecca to perform the Hajj, the great Muslim pilgrimage which constitutes one of the five pillars of Islam. More than 1.5 million worshipers from around the world are participating in this religious gathering in Saudi Arabia this year. On social networks, the London councilor shared several photos taken in front of the Kaaba, in the heart of the Grand Mosque of Mecca. He said he was “honored and blessed” to be able to make the pilgrimage, which he called a “profoundly transformative” experience. Sadiq Khan emphasized that Hajj symbolizes equality, unity and common humanity. He notably mentioned the wearing of the ihram, the simple garment worn by pilgrims, which, according to him, reminds us that “we are all equal before God”. The Mayor of London also insisted on the spiritual dimension of the pilgrimage. Beyond the rites performed in sometimes difficult conditions due to the heat, the Hajj represents, according to him, a unique opportunity for reflection, forgiveness and personal renewal.

Aged 55 and the son of Pakistani immigrants, Sadiq Khan had already performed Umrah in 2022, the small pilgrimage that can be performed at any time of the year. He said he would also dedicate his prayers to the people of London as well as to populations in difficulty across the world. According to Saudi authorities, around 1.5 million pilgrims from abroad had already arrived in the kingdom at the start of the week, a little more than last year despite persistent tensions in the region.
