The RN wants to fine veiled women: Antoine Léaument, LFI deputy denounces an “Islamophobic measure”

Verbalizing women simply because they wear a veil in the street. This is now one of the measures taken by the National Rally if it comes to power in 2027. Jean-Philippe Tanguy, RN deputy for the Somme, confirmed it: the party wants to ban the wearing of the veil in public spaces and sanction the women concerned with a fine. After several internal debates, the line has now been decided.

An announcement which immediately caused Antoine Léaument, LFI deputy for Essonne, to react, who denounces an “Islamophobic and discriminatory measure” targeting, once again, directly Muslim women. The MP especially points to a scene that speaks volumes: police officers mobilized to pursue veiled women in the streets and issue them fines because of their outfit. During this time, he recalls, the police have much more urgent things to do: fight against theft, violence, child crime and even embezzlement of public funds.

For Antoine Léaument, behind this obsession with the veil lies an old mechanism of the extreme right: designate a minority, create an internal enemy and divide the population on the basis of religion. Because behind the great speeches of the RN on “women’s freedom”, the contradiction is obvious: claiming to defend women while imposing on them, under penalty of a fine, the way in which they must dress. Women controlled on the street. Women fined for clothing. Women ordered to conform to an outfit decided by political power. In the RN, we therefore claim to “liberate” Muslim women by starting by threatening them with a fine if they refuse to obey. Freedom under police surveillance and under penalty of a fine: this is the new “emancipation” program of the National Rally.
