Muslims: Ménard wants to reassure those he helped to stigmatize

Now here is Robert Ménard as a seller of peace. According to an Ifop survey for Marianne46% of Muslims surveyed would consider leaving France if Marine Le Pen came to power. The mayor of Béziers wants to reassure them. You had to dare. In the extract broadcast on X, Ménard finds the figure “frightening”. But what seems to worry him most is that this fear benefits Mélenchon and LFI. Muslims would therefore be wrong to be afraid. And the left would be guilty of having opened their eyes.

A little throwback, just to refresh your memories. In 2015, the same Ménard announced on television a percentage of supposedly Muslim children in Béziers schools, based on their first names. A way of transforming schoolchildren into a demographic problem. In 2016, his municipality distributed a poster showing migrants accompanied by the formula: “That’s it, they’re coming…” So much for the CV of the electoral anesthesiologist. By dint of caricatures and amalgamations, this discourse has fueled the Islamophobic climate. Today, Ménard would like to explain to those who suffer from it that their concern is an invention of the Insoumis. The contempt remains intact: even their fear, Muslims would not be capable of thinking it themselves.

“I am not essentializing them,” he assures, before reminding Muslims that they must respect the rules and the country. As if they collectively had a loyalty test to pass. Ménard wants to reassure Muslims? Let him start by taking responsibility for what he helped put them through. Years of stigma don’t go away with a soothing “don’t be afraid, trust us.”
