Italy: the far right demonstrates against a mosque in Turin

In Turin, activists from Fratelli d’Italia demonstrated on Monday October 19 against the transformation of the former Nebiolo factory into a mosque and cultural center. Among them were Maurizio Marrone, vice-president of the Piedmont region, and MP Augusta Montaruli. Across the street, defenders of the project, including many young people, sang “Bella Ciao,” the song of anti-fascist resistance. The two gatherings faced each other for more than an hour, without violence, reports the ANSA agency.
The project is not limited to a place of prayer. According to the Italian Islamic Confederation, around 80% of the spaces will be devoted to other uses: low-cost student accommodation, library, study rooms and cultural activities. The building permit has been issued and the project leaders wish to begin work before the end of 2026. The protest also continues on the political level. Opposed to the project since 2021, those responsible for Fratelli d’Italia have announced that they want to adopt, by the end of October, a modification of the regional planning law to try to block it.
