Gaza: UN commission denounces continuing genocidal acts

An independent commission of inquiry mandated by the UN estimates that genocidal acts continue to be committed in Gaza, despite the ceasefire concluded in October 2025. In a report published Monday, October 26, it also accuses Israeli forces of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the occupied West Bank. Israel rejects these conclusions.

According to investigators, the truce did not put an end to acts aimed at destroying, in whole or in part, the Palestinian population of Gaza. The commission also notes an extension of Israeli military control: Israeli forces now control at least 60% of the territory, compared to 53% when the ceasefire was signed. In the West Bank, the report describes a sharp worsening of violence against Palestinians. It reports acts of torture, rape and other sexual violence, as well as persecution of civilians. Investigators notably identify 254 Palestinians killed in airstrikes between October 7, 2023 and September 30, 2026, compared to six between 2008 and October 6, 2023.

Faced with acts described as genocidal by this commission, diplomatic condemnations without follow-up are a political and moral bankruptcy. The impunity enjoyed by the Israeli authorities leaves them with a free hand, while the Palestinians pay the price in their flesh. What good are human rights proclamations if those who brandish them refuse to impose sanctions and hold their ally accountable? Genocide is not fought with statements of concern. Allowing crimes to continue without consequences is to make the promise of “never again” obscene.
