Germany: a Muslim association nominated for a major national volunteer prize

In Herne, North Rhine-Westphalia, a Muslim association has seen its commitment to young people recognized nationally. The Islamic Gemeinde Herne-Röhlinghausen is among the nominees for the Deutscher Engagementpreis 2026, a German prize which rewards voluntary initiatives. Based in the Ruhr region, this association carries out, beyond its religious vocation, educational work with children and young people. It offers free academic support, group activities and workshops dedicated to democracy and Europe. According to Islamic Zeitungaround a hundred children have already benefited from its support.

Already rewarded by her Land for her educational actions around Europe, she joins nearly 500 projects and people nominated this year. This nomination highlights the daily work of its volunteers and their contribution to local life. The Deutscher Engagementpreis occupies a special place in Germany: it brings together the winners proposed by a network of more than 650 prizes dedicated to civic engagement. It thus gives a national scope to initiatives already distinguished for their social utility, in areas as varied as education, solidarity, culture or the environment.

In addition to the awards awarded by a jury, an online vote allows the public to choose their winners until October 29. The first public prize is worth 10,000 euros, the second and third 7,500 and 5,000 euros. The awards ceremony will be held on November 26 in Berlin, providing new visibility to these initiatives and the volunteers who bring them to life.
