Sending soldiers to Niger: Algiers justifies its decision and asserts its regional power

Algeria formalized, Monday October 26, its decision to send units of the People’s National Army to Niger. The presidency explains that this mission responds to a request from the Nigerien authorities and aims to protect the economic and energy interests shared by the two countries. This decision comes after the approval of the two chambers of Parliament, meeting the day before behind closed doors. The press release does not specify either the number of personnel involved or the deployment schedule.

Ranked second African military power behind Egypt by Global Firepower in 2026, Algeria has one of the most powerful armies on the continent. The announced sending of soldiers to Niger would constitute its first official deployment abroad since 1973. It marks a historic turning point in a doctrine long attached to non-intervention beyond its borders, while Algiers now intends to mobilize its forces to secure its interests in its neighbor.

Beyond the stated protection mission, this decision can also be read as a message of firmness addressed to the powers which compete with Algiers for its regional influence. Analyst Abdellah Akir sees this in particular as a signal intended for Morocco and the United Arab Emirates. According to this reading, Algeria affirms its desire to exert more influence on the balance in the Sahel, by giving a concrete military dimension to the defense of its strategic interests.
