A Clarification Sought

June 20, 2002 by Admin

Question

Salaam,

What do you mean when you say ” … I know that I have not learned [moral] goodness from my environment, for had that been the case, my inclinations would have been the opposite of what they now are.”

Thank you.

Answer

Some people have the tendency of ascribing the knowledge and awareness of the ‘goodness’ and ‘morality’ entailed in the human soul to his external environment. In my opinion, had that been the case, man’s awareness and knowledge of ‘goodness’ and ‘morality’ would have been as unreliable and non-standardized as the attitude and the behavior of the society, in general.

I hope this helps.
