A first in New York: a director of Muslim affairs appointed to the Attorney General’s office

The New York Attorney General’s office, headed by Letitia James, has just created a new position of Director of Muslim Affairs. Long Island resident Mohammad Awais took office on December 6.

This historic appointment reflects the changing demographics and growing importance of the Muslim community in New York. The new director will be responsible for connecting with the state’s Muslim communities, identifying their needs and facilitating their access to the office’s civil rights, housing and consumer protection resources.

“New York is home to one of the largest Muslim communities in the country. This historic appointment will allow their voices to be better heard and their rights protected,” said Letitia James. This new position joins the office’s policy of openness towards different communities, alongside the links already established with the Latino, Jewish, Asian and LGBTQ+ communities. This initiative is a continuation of the actions carried out by Letitia James, who regularly participates in public assemblies, iftars and various community events organized by and for New York Muslims. The State of New York thus confirms its commitment to a more inclusive society respectful of its diversity.
