According to Reporters Without Borders, Gaza accounts for nearly half of journalists killed worldwide in one year

The number of journalists killed has risen again this year, and Gaza has become the epicenter. According to the latest RSF report, 43% of journalists killed around the world over the last twelve months were killed in the Palestinian enclave, almost all under fire from the Israeli armed forces. In total, 67 media professionals have been killed since December 2024, including at least 53 in war zones or as a result of organized crime. Israel is, by far, the deadliest army: it is responsible for more than 43% of crimes committed against journalists over the past year, notes the organization. Since October 2023, nearly 220 journalists have been killed in Gaza, including at least 65 in the course of or as a direct result of their work.
Other fronts remain particularly dangerous: in Ukraine, Russian forces continue to target domestic and foreign reporters; in Sudan, several journalists have been killed, some after being kidnapped. In Mexico, organized crime has caused a surge in murders, making 2025 the deadliest year in the country in three years. Furthermore, 503 journalists are currently imprisoned around the world, mainly in China, Russia and Burma. Israel, for its part, is detaining 20 Palestinian journalists, the vast majority arrested in Gaza and the West Bank.
Faced with this spiral, RSF warns: “Journalists do not die, they are killed,” recalled its director general, Thibaut Bruttin, denouncing impunity and the deliberate strategy of certain armed forces to silence witnesses of conflicts.
