Al-Azhar connects its diaspora to the Quran digitally

Al-Azhar University in Cairo is launching an ambitious online Quranic education program aimed at its diaspora. This initiative, which will begin in January 2025, has already attracted more than 5,000 Egyptians spread across 69 countries.

Placed under the direct supervision of the vice-grand imam of Al-Azhar, Dr. Mohamed Abdel Rahman al-Dawayni, this digital course offers complete teaching: memorization of the Koran, rules of recitation (tajweed) and interpretation (tafsir). Rigorously selected teachers will provide personalized monitoring of students.

“It’s a revolution in our educational approach,” confides a program manager. “Technology now allows us to maintain a strong spiritual connection with our compatriots, whether they are in Sydney, Toronto or London.” A flexibility particularly appreciated by expatriate families, keen to pass on their cultural heritage to their children.

This approach by the most prestigious Sunni institution marks a turning point in its influence strategy. By adapting to digital tools, Al-Azhar reaffirms its role as guardian of tradition while meeting the spiritual needs of a globalized Egyptian community.
